Program Overview

In recent years, queer animation has become a dynamic movement, both qualitatively and quantitatively. In conjunction with this, we will screen a rich program of animation by an increasingly diverse group of "women," and invite you to discover their independent and diverse consciousness and world through works related to LGBTQA+ and women. This program will include screenings of films from the above curated programs on the themes of .

Guest: Akiko Shimizu MC: Honami Yano

The event at the Community Gallery will include a talk session with guests who are active in queer/feminist studies and film writing to learn more about gender, sexuality, and women in order to better understand and approach the films. Please join us after the screening. (featuring Akiko Shimizu (Part 1), Mizuki Kodama (Part 2), and Honami Yano (each talk session))

Vivien Forsans is a franco-canadian animation filmmaker based in Montreal. Since 2016, he has directed six short films, which were screened and awarded in over 40 festivals around the world such as the TIFF Next Wave, the Emerging Filmmakers Night or the Sommets du Cinéma d’Animation. His animated film work, colorful and digital, tends to play with both narrative and experimental means, as well as genres and categories of film such as comedy, documentary, drama, and horror.

In this joyful portrait, filmmaker Ann Marie Fleming animates the formative days and musical career of Calgary-born identical twins Tegan and Sara Quin. Their remarkable journey over the past 20 years has often intersected with notions of identity—as artists, as individuals, as sisters, as queer women, and as leading activists in the LGBTQ community. Their musical progression parallels and amplifies their commitment to bringing the marginal to the mainstream.

Ann Marie Fleming

Ann Marie Fleming is an award-winning Canadian visual artist, writer, director, animator and cross-platform media maker who works in a variety of genres (animation, experimental, documentary and drama). Her work often deals with themes of family, history and memory. Born in the Ryuku Islands (Okinawa Prefecture), under U.S. military occupation, with a mostly-Chinese mother and an Australian father, and no birthright citizenship, no wonder her work often deals with themes of family, history and memory.

Youyang Yu (youyangyu.myportfolio.com) is a animation filmmaker, teacher and curator. He graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2016, London and kick started his career in Beijing in 2018 as the art director of the 7 th China Independent Animation Film Forum. He co-founded Feinaki Animation Week with a group of internationally well connected Chinese animation artists in 2019 while freelancing as a teaching artist instructing drawing and animation courses in private art studios in Beijing. He now live and works in the twin-city, US.

Fabien Corre

Student at the GOBELINS school, Fabien Corre, 21, spent his childhood in Brittany where he obtained a Baccalauréat in Applied Arts in 2014. The following year, he joined Paris to learn animation cinema. His taste for filmmaking was reinforced there, and pushed him to want to develop his personal projects in the future.

Kelsi Phung

Kelsi Phung is a final year student in animation at the GOBELINS school, after a short stint at the Ecole des Métiers du Cinéma d'Animation d'Angoulême. He began his career in the film industry with the video "Wonderland" for the band Caravan Palace. Today, his artistic approach revolves around his commitment to the LGBT+ community to which he seeks to give more visibility in the landscape of animation cinema.

Alexandre Siqueira was born in Rio de Janeiro in 1980. Since 1999 he develops and collaborates in several animated films projects. In 2010 he finish the animation filmmaking course at la Poudrière school, where he directs "Journey to the Sunflowers Fields". "Purpleboy" is his latest animated short film.

Jamie is a 20 something year old non-binary person living in Melbourne. They’re whip-smart, creative and have an encyclopaedic knowledge of cinema and pop culture. They’re also single, bored and perpetually horny. Forced into near-isolation during Melbourne’s COVID-19 lockdown, Jamie keeps themselves entertained bingeing on queer film and TV. What begins as mere escapism turns sensual when they start having sexual delusions involving their favourite queer characters. Fantasy and reality merge as they recount their erotic encounters to their physician Dr. Holland and receive an unusual diagnosis. Are You Still Watching? explores the emancipatory power of the queer imagination, combining erotic fan fiction tropes, magical realism and a firm camp sensibility.

Tali Polichtuk is a writer and film programmer. Her work has been published widely and she serves as the Editor of Sissy Screens. Are You Still Watching? is her directorial and screenwriting debut inspired by her love of slash fiction, queer cinema and Sarah Paulson.

As the world learns to live again in the midst of the pandemic, for many Arabic-speaking LGBTQ+ people living in Montreal, this is just a period of time like any other. When you’ve fled homophobic violence in your home country and endured a painful migratory journey, or you still face social prejudices stemming from intercultural and intergenerational conflicts, surviving social isolation is nothing new. Part of THE CURVE, a collection of social distancing stories that bring us together.

Eli Jean Tahchi

Eli Jean Tahchi is a graduate of the Netflix-funded mixed program at the Institut National de l'Image et du Son (INIS) in Montreal. He is a filmmaker and actor. In Beirut, he studied cinema at the Lebanese Academy of Fine Arts and obtained a bachelor's degree in Film & TV Production. In 2011, he moved to Montreal and pursued studies in cinema at the University of Montreal, and finally, at INIS. Eli Jean Tahchi's committed cinema is sharp, human and metaphorically charged. Since 2011, he has accumulated projects of varied and culturally diverse genres.

Violette DELVOYE, Chloé ALLIEZ

The paths of Violette Delvoye and Chloé Alliez crossed at La Cambre in 2014, where they directed Projection sur Canapé (Violette) and Toutes Nuancées (Chloé), among others. Following this, they decided to set up together a project of travelling and participative series called World in (Stop)Motion. They spent several months in Europe doing these stop-motion workshops before finally returning to the realm of real French fries. Then began the writing of the short film Les Liaisons Foireuses where Chloé's colorful universe and Violette's sensitivity are mixed. Their adventure now continues in France where they live on love, stop-motion and salted butter.

Tan Wei Keong

Tan Wei Keong (b. 1984) is an animation filmmaker. He is an alumnus of Berlinale Talents 2022 and a resident at SFFILM FilmHouse for his next short and feature development. His latest film, Kingdom (2018), has been selected to compete at the Berlin International Film Festival. His previous film, Between Us Two (2017), received the Best Singapore Short Film award at Singapore International Film Festival and the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary Short at Outfest LA 2018. His highly acclaimed body of work received international recognition at many film festivals, including those at Annecy, Zagreb, Stuttgart and Toronto. He was awarded the Young Artist Award by the National Arts Council of Singapore in 2019.
